James provides strategic oversight and thought leadership to the Transaction Tax practice at DMA. He leads DMA’s western US Transaction Tax division and manages a team that handles sales and use tax overpayment reviews, sales and use tax audit defense projects, and transaction analyses for DMA’s Fortune 1000 clients. James also oversees DMA’s Tax Advisory Group, which performs nexus reviews and develops tax matrices and Voluntary Disclosure Agreement filings, among other services. He regularly consults with sales and uses tax professionals on the entire transaction tax lifecycle. James partners closely with his counterparts across all regions and DMA divisions to ensure clients maximize tax savings opportunities and operate efficiently.

  • Consultant and resource to numerous Fortune 1000 tax departments, offering insights on jurisdiction- and industry-specific tax savings opportunities
  • Facilitated the recovery of over $300,000,000 in overpaid transaction taxes on behalf of his clients
  • Has performed sales and use tax reviews, audit defense, Washington Business & Occupation tax analyses, and extensive research for clients in various industries, including data centers, oil and gas, financial services, government contracting, telecommunications, retail, and healthcare
  • Frequently works with the states of California, North Dakota, and Washington on prospective exemptions and the resolution of tax disputes
  • Worked for the Maricopa County Assessor’s Office prior to joining DMA
