C&I BOOT CAMP
Sunday, October 20 | 3:00 – 5:00 PM
Blair Westmoreland, Director, Credits and Incentives
Before the start of the symposium, the program committee is offering this optional session for those interested in the basics of economic development incentives. This session will build a solid credits and incentives foundation, allowing participants to immediately apply the knowledge to their day-to-day work. The boot camp will provide a basic overview of the difference between discretionary incentives and state and federal statutory incentives. Additionally, this session will articulate how to identify triggers for incentives with a company, thus allowing participants to drive corporate value. The session will focus on a broad overview of state and federal statutory incentives, including employment (hiring and training), investment, geography, etc. It will also illustrate types and programs trending in today’s economic development landscape. A review of basic taxes such as income/franchise tax, sales/use tax, and property tax will also be included.
After attending this session, participants will be able to:
-
- Distinguish between statutory and discretionary incentives
- Recognize specific discretionary incentives
- Recognize specific statutory tax credits offered by states
- Identify specific popular programs and understand why they are attractive to businesses
- Identify tools to assist in reaching incentives
