Texas Sales Tax Holiday for Emergency Supplies April 27 - 29 2019

Texas Sales Tax Holiday

The Texas Comptroller is again allowing Texans to purchase certain emergency preparedness supplies tax-free from April 27 to April 29, 2019.

Tax holidays are positive events for consumers; however, they often create headaches for retailers' tax and IT teams. Companies that do not leverage an automated software solution are often scrambling to determine and capture all SKUs that would be included in the tax holiday and push that data to their POS systems... only to have to undo the process a couple of days later.

By leveraging a retail tax solution such as TIFR - Tax Interchange For Retail, retailers find that this once time-consuming manual process is automated - with little to no prep time for tax and IT teams.

There is no limit on the number of qualifying items a consumer can purchase. Items included in the tax holiday are:

  • household batteries, fuel containers and flashlights priced at less than $75
  • hurricane shutters and emergency ladders priced at less than $300
  • portable generators priced at less than $3,000

Delivery, shipping, handling and transportation charges are considered part of the sales price for determining taxability.

Items that DO NOT qualify for the tax holiday include:

  • batteries for automobiles, boats and other motorized vehicles
  • camping stoves and camping supplies
  • chainsaws
  • plywood
  • extension ladders and stepladders
  • tents
